Together with artist Trevor Jones, the Evening Standard newspaper of London has issued a commemorative NFT for the coronation.
The Evening Standard newspaper has partnered with digital artist Trevor Jones to release a collection of commemorative Ethereum NFT on Nifty Gateway, just in time for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on May 6. The collection is available for free.
Developed in partnership with Apollo NFT, “The Oath” can be claimed via Nifty Gateway or a QR code printed in the newspaper. For those traveling to the capital to participate in the celebrations in person, the QR codes are also displayed on billboards along Oxford Street. However, the NFTs will not be minted and distributed to collectors until May 7.
“With the eyes of the world on London this weekend, we are extremely proud to collaborate with Trevor Jones and celebrate this iconic moment for our city,” Evening Standard CEO Charles Yardley said. “Trevor’s NFT depicts imagery representing centuries of tradition and history, in a format that represents how the modern world is democratising art for both artists and collectors.”
Jones began The Oath NFT as a physical artwork at his Edinburgh studio. The artwork depicts Queen Elizabeth II wearing Saint Edward’s Crown at her coronation in 1953.
“With Layer-2 in play now and the carbon footprint down 99.99%, there’s no longer an environmental issue with using the Ethereum blockchain,” Jones said. “More importantly, however, I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to onboard new collectors into the NFT art scene, which is currently hitting quite the lows from the last couple of years.”
Layer-2 protocol is a type of blockchain protocol that is constructed on top of existing blockchain networks such as Immuntable X or the Bitcoin Lightning Network.
The Evening Standard has followed in the footsteps of other media organizations such as TIME, GQ, and Playboy by venturing into the realm of Web3. However, the Oath is not the initial NFT mint to pay tribute to the British royal family. A group of Web3 developers including Fabio Sev?, Vin?cius Rodrigues, Everton Matumoto, and mladen.eth released an NFT collection called QueenE in September. The collection was created to honor the life of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the longest reigning monarch of England from 1952 until 2022, following her death.
